THE OLD SCHOOL

The current nursery environment suffers from severe overheating in summer, being what can only be described as a cramped tin shed. Teaching conditions are difficult due to the environmental conditions being in a state of constant flux and a lack of natural daylight.

The Calais Village Project

find our more about the community in calais

Two years ago a previous generation of Nottingham second year architecture students ventured to Calais Village and began the first phase of this nursery school project. Two classrooms and an office building were constructed but the site was left unfinished with some considerable issues left unresolved. It's our job this time to complete the school, building upon the existing structures, by adding more classrooms, a kitchen and multiple communal spaces. Calais Village itself suffers from severe unemployment and the community is constantly in a state of economic strife. Our project aims to give the next generation of Calais residents new opportunities for a brighter future.

Our Design Brief

Building on the work from the previous phase forced us to design holistically with the environment. This provided an exciting opportunity to work with the existing buildings and gain an understanding of the local culture; leading us to designing schemes that are appropriate and sympathetic to the context.

The beauty of this design is derived solely from its simplicity, both in plan (with its stepped niche design) and section (with the stepped roof system).
